Alliance is defined as a state of being allied united in purpose or joined togheter in common cause. This state of union of minds I believe is captured in this recording. When I initially met Pietro Tonolo I was struck by his unamissing yet self assured nature. I soon discovered that behind that retiring attitude wa a fiery imaginative saxophonist and composer of the highest caliber. We performed togheter for the first time in the summer of 1988 and I became acquainted with the bassist Piero Leveratto the bass player on this recording. In August of 1990 we teamed with the fourth member of Alliance the very fine pianist and composer Riccardo Zegna. Aside from the problem of collective thinking there is the human need for sympathy from all members of a musical unit in order to have a successeful recording of performance. The rapport that was captured by Pietro Piero Riccardo later and later on trombonist Roberto and myself was almost magical and also quite a lot of fun. Throughout this recording everyone performs with an infectious overpowering zeal to meet and fulfill musical challenges. I've rarely captured in all of my recording experience the feeling of symphaty bending and of give-and-take that happened on this date. Music is described as the universal language and I believe Jazz is the universal music because it is the most democratic of all expressions; an alliance whose purpose is the freedom of every individual involved to express his or her point of view about a given subject.
