Lalo Schifrin è uno dei compositori della silver age più distinti, ancora in attività oggi. Probabilmente il più influente quando irruppe nel cinema e nella televisione negli anni 60, la sua sintesi unica di Jazz, sinfonico pop e avanguardia si stava invigorendo. Per la prima volta Film Score Monthly presenta una collezione espansa di film per il cinema di Schifrin degli anni '60 che comprende un quitetto di colonne sonore originali MGM e registrazioni degli album.
Rhino! (1964) fu la prima colonna sonora hollywoodiana di Schifrin, scritta per un'avventura basata su di un safari con Robert CUlp, Harry Guardino e Shirley Eaton. Schifrin venne raccomandato dalla MGM Records (di cui era uno degli artisti) in qualità di risposta per Hatari! di Henry Mancini. Schifrin portò a compimento la colonna con una colonna sonora sinfonica e vibrante con strumentazioni esotiche africane e molti temi memorabili.
Once a Thief (1965), è la seconda colonna di Schifrin per la MGM, a base di jazz per il film di Ralph Nelson con Alain Delon, Jack Palance e Ann-Margret. La colonna sonora di Schifrin a tratti dinamica e poetica fu considerata dalla critica uno dei rari ed autentici usi dell'idioma in un film Hollywoodiano. L'album include sia la colonna sonora originale (inedita) e l'LP del 1965 per Verve Records, Once a Thief and Other Themes (che include parti di The Man From U.N.C.L.E e Joy House oltre ad alcuni brani non facenti parte di colonne sonore)
Il terzo CD ci offre quella che probabilmente è la colonna sonora più celebre del compositore per la MGM, The Cincinnati Kid (1965), il film di Norman Jewison con Steve McQueen nei panni di un giocatore d'azzardo di New Orleans negli anni '30. Schifrin ha composto una colonna sonora blues incentrata su di un tema per armonica, cantata (parole di Dorcas Cochran) nei titoli di coda da Ray Charles. L'album ci offre sia l'album MGM (un ibrido di colonna sonora originale e nuove registrazioni) e la colonna sonora originale completa così come venne registrata per il film, incluse molte tracce alternative e inutilizzate.
Il CD 4 e 5 ci offrono due colonne sonore dei tardi anni '60 con cui MGM tentò di costruire le carriere delle stars di The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Robert Vaughn (1967 The Venetian Affair) e David McCallum (1968 Sol Madrid) facendoli comparire separatamente in storie non correlate a base di spionaggio internazionale. Le colonne sonore di Schifrin per entrambi i film sono eccellenti, pulsanti motivi da guerra fredda per The Venetian Affair (con cymbalon) e latin pop jazz per Sol Madrid (contornato da una partitura classica).
Il CD5 si conclude con una assortimento di tracce bonus realizzate da Schifrin per la MGM in quegli anni, inclusi temi dalla serie TV Medical Center, Teh Mask of Sheba e Earth II. Il set da 5 CD, a parte poche tracce è in un eccellente stereo, rimasterizzato dall'originale 35mm a tre tracce (per le colonne sonore originali) o dai master quarto di pollice a due tracce (per gli album).
