Francesco Cardinaud (Jean Gabin) is a fish seller in a small French town, getting back home he deosn't find his wife (Georgette Anys) anymore. He fled with a wrongoder of the village and reactions to the episodes are diverse: some people is even happy about that. But Cardinaud is a pacific man and doesn't want to avenge. What he really cares for, after an initial disorienting moment, is to win back his wife again.
