is pleased to reissue on CD the wonderful OST by Ennio Morricone for the drama
film I figli chiedono perché, directed in 1972 by Nino Zanchin with a
screenplay by Suso Cecchi D’Amico and Nino Zanchin, photography by Eliseo
Caponera, music by Ennio Morricone, and a cast featuring Susanna Melandri,
Rosemary Dexter, Umberto Orsini, Habib Namouchi, Helga Bellgho, Jeannie Berlin,
Mohamed Bosif.
The
Plot:
In a small Palestinian village, Michèle, a Jewish
girl, dates Karim, an Arab boy. The sympathy and affinity between them grows
stronger despite the vast social differences between their two separate and
irreconcilable worlds: on one side, a wealthy, upper-class family of
entrepreneurs living in a luxurious villa, revered by their servants and
immersed in every comfort; on the other, a poor, extended family living
squeezed into a couple of small rooms in a house in a working-class
neighborhood of the city. Although the innocent games of children are the
center of a seemingly peaceful dimension, the terrifying political tension that
foreshadows an impending war looms. At the first signs of war, Michèle's
family decides to leave the country, traumatizing the little girl, who is
experiencing a childhood crush that binds her emotionally to Karim in an
increasingly visceral way. The children ask, "Why does man divide what God
has joined?"
The
music:
Despite
winning the 1974 Giffoni Film Festival, no music from the film was released
until 1994, when Point Records/GDM (PRCD 102) released a double-feature CD
including selections from Cuore di mamma (1969). We had to wait until
2003 for the complete soundtrack supervised by Maestro Morricone to be released
on vinyl (RED 146-1) and CD (RED 146-2) by Dagored. After more than twenty
years, this OST returns on CD with a duration of 43:40, prepared using the mono
masters from the original recording sessions.
Ennio Morricone composed a poignant love theme with
the crystalline voice of Edda Dell’Orso, who vocalizes on a melody for piano
and orchestra. The main theme, “Tema” (Tr.1), is reprised for guitar and
strings in “Nuovi angeli” (Tr.3) and for oboe and large orchestra (Tr.8). The
composer also wrote a series of pieces dominated by avant-garde and psychedelic
atmospheres created by the harp with echo and reverberation effects to
represent the enchanted world of a fairy tale in contrast to the horrors of war:
“Arpa-Fata Morgana prima” (Tr.5), “Arpa-Fata Morgana seconda” (Tr.10), “Arpa”
(Tr.14), and “Arpa (versione Arpe II)” (Tr.19). Worthy of note is “Fiaba
seconda” (Tr.16), a thrilling piece with a mystical-religious flavor featuring
Edda’s vocals accompanied by the Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni choir and
orchestra (Tr.16). This reissue represents an excellent opportunity to pay
homage to the colossal musical artistry of the genius Ennio
Morricone.
